Sheep to the Wolves

English, French & Spanish

Sheep to the Wolves

We learned early how silence can sound like safety.

The fence looks holy until it locks from the outside.

A soft voice can still sharpen its teeth.

Hunger writes the law, and mercy reads it last.

Sheep to the Wolves

Sheep walk at dawn with wool full of promises.
We learned early how silence can sound like safety.
The wolves smile when fear lowers its eyes.

Calm blood beats beneath bells of faith.
The fence looks holy until it locks from the outside.
Night teaches the gentle the cost of staying gentle.

We follow the shepherd even when he smells of iron.
A soft voice can still sharpen its teeth.
The pack waits until the crowd scatters.

We believed goodness was enough armor.
Hunger writes the law, and mercy reads it last.
Between wool and fangs, the choice is never neutral.

We learn too late to name the wolf.

Note
This was written with two aims, one to question the systems we follow, are we all sheep? Or are some of us leaders? Are the leaders puppets or masters?
At some point most of us or dare I say, all of us have been like sheep - manipulated, controlled and programmed. We live in a world where people follow trends, strive to fit into groups, yearn to belong…
If belonging requires giving up our rights, freedom and being under control, is belonging something we should strive for? Or is a better word, being? How about we all be, make our own choices, ask questions, look within and silence the noise of the crowd?
Why do we praise those on top and walk past those who stretch out their hands for pocket change?
The second aim is to use this as a way to encourage EAL students to learn new words / phrases in English and those interested in French or Spanish to learn new phrases. Music is a powerful tool to learn vocabulary for those who enjoy or want to learning languages!

Thanks for tuning in!
